Bovenstaande is een fragment uit de Engelse vertaling die ik van 'Populärmusik från Vittula' heb gelezen. In deze autobiografie beschrijft Mikael Niemi zijn jeugd in Pajala, een klein Zweeds dorpje dat tegen de grens met Finland aanligt. Het is een tragikomisch relaas over het leven in Lapland en opgroeien in een gehucht waar de roerige jaren zestig bijna ongemerkt aan voorbij lijken te gaan.

Mikael Niemi's debuut is inmiddels in 26 talen verschenen en 1 op de 8 Zweden bezit er een exemplaar van. In 2004 werd Populärmusik från Vittula verfilmd, half Pajala kreeg een rol aangeboden en de schrijver is zelf te horen als voice-over. Het resultaat is op zich best aardig, al is de film nogal fragmentarisch en waarschijnlijk vooral de moeite waard wanneer je eerst het boek gelezen hebt.

Na wat omzwervingen door Zweden en Finland woont Mikael Niemi tegenwoordig weer in Pajala, met zijn Nederlandse vrouw en drie kinderen. Zijn kinderen worden tweetalig opgevoed, ze spreken Zweeds en Fries.
